If you are choosing between a Maine Coon and a Ragdoll, size probably brought both breeds onto your list. What happens after the photographs matters just as much: how the cat interacts with you, how its coat fits your routine and whether your equipment suits its body.

Appearance is summarised from CFA’s Maine Coon description and Ragdoll standard. The comparison concerns registered breed descriptions, not photo-based confirmation of unknown ancestry.
Maine Coon vs Ragdoll size chart
The table uses the adult-weight descriptions on TICA’s Maine Coon and Ragdoll pages, checked October 22, 2026. Other references may give different ranges.
| Adult group | Maine Coon | Ragdoll |
|---|---|---|
| Female | Typically 12-15 lb (about 5.4-6.8 kg) | About 10-15 lb (4.5-6.8 kg) |
| Male | Usually around 18-22 lb (8.2-10.0 kg) | Generally 15-20 lb (6.8-9.1 kg) |
Kilograms are calculated conversions rounded to one decimal. These are descriptive ranges, not required weights, growth targets or a guarantee. Your veterinarian can assess an individual cat’s condition.
Is a Maine Coon always bigger than a Ragdoll?
No. The ranges overlap. A male Ragdoll and a female Maine Coon can reverse the impression given by a simplified “biggest breed” comparison. Age and build matter too.
A hypothetical 15-pound cat from either breed still needs its own measurements checked. Weight cannot tell you the usable length of its preferred sleeping position or whether it can turn comfortably in a carrier. See our measuring and growth guide for context.
How do Maine Coon and Ragdoll personalities compare?
TICA describes Maine Coons as companions that enjoy joining their people’s activities. Its Ragdoll profile describes a quieter, relaxed tendency while also noting that young cats can be lively and adults still enjoy play.
Use these as questions to explore, rather than a promise about the cat you will bring home. Ask its carer how it behaves when visitors arrive, what play it enjoys and whether it seeks close contact.
Which is more affectionate?
Affection is difficult to rank between breeds. Think about the kind of companionship you want: following you around, sitting nearby, playing together or choosing a lap. Ask for examples of that cat’s behaviour instead of relying on a label.
Will a Ragdoll always enjoy being picked up?
Do not assume so from the name. Ask the current carer to demonstrate comfortable handling, support the cat and respond to its behaviour. A reputation for being relaxed is not a reason to insist on contact.
Which coat needs more grooming?
CFA recommends combing Maine Coons two or three times weekly and Ragdolls at least once or twice weekly. Those starting routines still need to match the individual coat and shedding pattern.
Ask which comb reaches through the coat comfortably, where tangles tend to appear and what routine the cat already accepts. A flowing coat can conceal a small tangle, so judge your routine by its result. Our grooming guide covers the practical checks.
Which is easier to care for in your home?
Write down the routine you can offer before choosing. Who handles feeding and coat care? Where can the cat rest undisturbed? Who provides play and care while you travel?
Both deserve suitable scratching and resting spaces. Use our cat-tree guide and litter-box size checker for measurement questions, then confirm the relevant product’s specifications. A breed name on a product listing does not establish fit.
For costs, compare written purchase or adoption terms and actual ongoing quotes. Our budget guide provides a framework; its Maine Coon price examples are not Ragdoll quotes.
Can you identify either breed from a photograph?
You can describe visible features, but a photo does not establish an individual cat’s family history. If pedigree matters, ask for records and check what a seller’s description is based on. Our ancestry guide explains the limitations.
If your shortlist includes a Norwegian Forest Cat, compare its face and coat in our Norwegian Forest Cat comparison.
